    Employees of Goodwill go to work each day just like everyone else. They stock shelves in retail stores, drive trucks, balance spreadsheets in accounting, manage people and much more. They are helping fund, through their work, training and job programs what will put people with employment barriers in our community back to work.

     

    Goodwill currently has an opening for a Grounds Technician at the Roanoke Jobs Campus. 

     

    Job purpose:  Provides general grounds maintenance and maintains healthy growth of grass, trees, shrubs, hedges, ground cover, and flowers. Responsible for general maintenance and repairs to GIV facilities and equipment during off season months.

    Responsibilities

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    • Operate vehicles and power equipment such as mowers, trimmers, snow blowers, chain saws, electric clippers, pruning saws, in a safe efficient manner.
    • Ensure that all assigned equipment is maintained and safely operated to manufacturer specification. Arrange for repairs and service from authorized dealers.
    • Prune or trim trees, shrubs, or hedges, using shears, pruners, or chain saws.
    • Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding grubbing, removing thatch, or trimming
    • Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, planters and other ground features.
    • Paint/maintain parking lot directional arrows, crosswalks, regular parking spaces, handicapped parking spaces and curbs. Insure that each is maintained to ADA standards/ specifications.
    • Prepare/mix and apply fertilizers, weed killers, brush killer, insecticides/pesticides, or other hazardous lawn care treatments per manufactures instructions. Insure these types of products are stored safely and SDS is on file for each.
    • Plant grass, bulbs, flowering plants, ground cover, trees, or shrubs and apply mulch as needed.
    • Haul or spread topsoil.
    • Water lawns, trees, or plants using portable sprinkler system, hoses, or watering cans.
    • Maintain/repair fences, benches or other structures.
    • Shovel snow from walks, driveways or parking lots and spread salt.
    • Attach wires from planted trees to support stakes
    • Keeps drains and flow line free from debris.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while providing excellent customer service for internal and external customers.

    ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Accomplishes all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested for successful completion of the mission of Goodwill Industries of the Valleys
    • As directed or approved by Facilities/Fleet Manager provides general maintenance and repairs for assigned facilities, systems or equipment.

    Responds to maintenance and mechanical emergencies as needed and requested

     

    Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS

     

    Experience, Competencies and Education

     

    • High school diploma or general education degree( GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Language Skills

     

    • Ability to read and interpret general business periodicals,professional journals, technical procedure manuals. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

    Mathematical Skills

     

    • Basic Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    Reasoning Ability

    • High Skills: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written,oral, diagram, or schedule form.

     

    Experience

    • A minimum of one year work expereince in grounds maintenance and general knowledge of facility repairs and maintenance which would include but not limited to plumbing, drywall repair and painting, minor electrical repairs,etc..

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

     

    • A valid driver's license and the ability to provide proof of insurance is required to drive personal vehicle on company business. Additionally, an acceptable motor vehicle record based on Goodwill guidelines is required to drive a company vehicle or transport program participants.

    Will work in wet and humid conditions. Will work near moving mechanical parts frequently. Will occasionally work in high, precarious places, be exposed to fumes and airborne particles, and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. Will be exposed to outdoor weather, including extreme cold in winter and extreme heat in summer. There is some risk to electrical shock. Work with mechanical and electrical equipment will often cause vibrations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud
