  • Overview

    Goodwill currently has an opening for a Part Time Food Service Technician. This employee will perform steward/dishwasher duties at the Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center (IVTSCC). Responsibilities include ensuring a clean, safe and sanitary environment for employees and customers at the IVTSCC; washing dishes, serveware and bakeware, pots and pans, and operating the automatic dishwasher; and placing dry dishes, etc., in the appropriate storage containers/areas. Additional responsibilities include cleaning/mopping floors, cleaning and sanitizing equipment used in food preparation, emptying trash and compost, and working as a team player with other food service workers/dishwashers to ensure the work is completed in a timely manner.


    • Required Schedule: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 4:00pm to 11:00pm
    • Dinner is provided to employee at no cost
    • Transportation will be provided to the work site from the Christiansburg Goodwill Store
    • Possibility available to work extra shifts


    Percentage of Job Duties and Descriptions

    35% Food Service and Dishwasher

    Food Service

    • Ensures a clean, safe and sanitary environment for employees and customers.
    • Organizes and stocks work areas daily.
    • Completes special tasks as instructed by supervisor.
    • Portrays a positive attitude and professional appearance at all times.


    • Will operate an automated dishwashing machine.
    • Responsible for cleaning the kitchen floors.
    • Responsible for cleaning equipment used in food preparation.
    • Should have a good ability to understand and follow instructions and the ability to move and handle 50 pounds without assistance.
    • Shows up on time and is dependable and reliable to follow schedules and kitchen policies and procedures.
    • Assists with food preparation when needed based on interest and level of ability.
    • Knows how to be a team player to ensure the work is completed in a timely manner.

    35% Customer Service 

    • Participate in creating a hospitable work environment for co-workers and functions as a member of the kitchen team.
    • Understands and responds promptly to identified customer and workplace needs.
    • Displays skill, sensitivity, and adaptability in relating to diverse people.
    • Solicits and uses feedback to improve service.

    20% Sanitation 

    • Keep service area clean and organized.
    • Maintains daily cleaning assignments.
    • Maintains service area for a maximum “A” health rating.


    10% Safety 

    • Maintain a safe work environment keeping floors dry, aisles clear of carts, etc., handling knives and glass with care.


    Experience, Competencies and Education

    • Previous customer service experience and/or experience working with the public; communication skills; ability to understand and follow instructions and be able to move and handle up to 50 pounds without assistance.
    • Food service experience; hotel food service experience using a commercial dishwasher; knowledge of general safety/sanitation rules.

    Mathematical Skills

    • Ability to perform basic mathematical equations.

    Reasoning Ability

    • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking of a wide range of practical problems.
