    Goodwill currently has an opening for a Safety Specialist at out Roanoke Jobs Campus. The safety specialist will be responsible for maintaining and implementing safety programs for the organization. This position will focus on streamlining processes and analyzing risk across all business segments to continuously improve internal customer service and safety awareness and to meet desired outcomes and goals.

    Responsibilities

    • Maintain and periodically update the monthly safety incentive program, “I caught you working safely,” market and encourage its use; timely pull and announce winners.
    • Maintain a library of safety resources based on organizational risk.  Identify and regularly update these safety resources for staff out on SharePoint (intranet) with an emphasis on simple, organized and easy to read and follow procedures. 
    • Conduct internal safety inspections of all GIV locations by utilizing established checklists, follow up with management to insure deficiencies are cleared timely.
    • Provide regular guidance and communication to Safety Coordinators and Safety Alternates. 
    • Internal safety contact person for safety related concerns. Respond to inquiries, questions and concerns in a timely manner, effectively collaborate and communicate with colleagues. This position will consult with other Goodwill partners or outside safety experts for guidance and/or conduct internet research when applicable. 
    • Establish, maintain, and perform effective emergency drills for the Melrose Job Campus in compliance with CARF, review and update emergency plans annually (or more often if demanded); partner with the safety coordinators and alternates to ensure all employees and participants understand and practice to prepare for an actual emergency.  Maintain and regularly update emergency drill workbook template and provide guidance to all other Goodwill locations.
    • Conduct individual monthly or quarterly safety meetings in the absence of Safety Coordinator and Alternate for Melrose Job Campus individual suites. Maintain Safety Manual for Melrose Job Campus and maintain Safety Manual template for all other locations.
    • Develop and maintain simple, easy to understand safety manual for the organization.  Review safety policies and procedures annually, make recommendations for improvement.  Ensure regulatory compliance and train staff in safety policies and procedures.
    • Work with outside partners (vendors) to schedule regular external safety inspections, maintain inventory of external and internal inspections by location.  Regularly review and update internal safety inspection checklist to improve impact and outcomes.
    • Work with Goodwill training department to develop short, easy to understand safety training videos for moderate to high risk areas.  Review current safety training videos/material annually and provide updates to training department.
    • Review and update safety forms and templates to improve effectiveness and efficiencies.
    • Work in alignment with the Workers Compensation & Safety Specialist to improve safety programs to drive down accident rate and enrich organizations safety culture. (may include but not limited to: job safety analysis to identify root cause of problem)
    • Create and maintain evacuation maps at the Melrose Job Campus.
    • Maintain Hazardous Communication program and procedures.
    • Maintain Fire Service Program and requests, ensure all required outside inspections are completed.
    • Ensures compliance with OSHA, DOL and CARF
    • Other job duties and projects as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Experience, Competencies and Education

    • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Risk Management, Safety, HR, or closely related field preferred; or Associates degree in Business, Environmental Studies or related field with 3-5 year’s work experience in HR or Safety. Safety credential desired, but not required. 
    • Intermediate to advanced skills in excel (knowledge of pivot tables desirable)
    • Comfortable with the development of forms in Excel, Word or Adobe highly desired
    • Both proficient and comfortable with computer technology. And experience in SharePoint (intranet) and electronic file retention.
    • Some experience in the interpretation and research of OSHA and an understanding of Workers’ Compensation is desired.
    • Some experience with fire safety, occupational safety, hazard awareness, risk and loss prevention is desired.
    • Minimum typing speed of 35 WPM
    • Independent, extremely organized, approachable, effective communicator, positive and motivating are a must.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    • This position travels across Goodwill territory 10-20%; Valid State of Virginia driver’s license and proof of insurance required to drive personal car on company business. 
    • Additionally, 3+ point DMV record required to drive company vehicle.

    • CARF accreditation (no safety recommendations or consultations)
